1.
Did the author capture the essence of small town living in her
description of Holyoke, Colorado? 2.
The opening scene in the story showed the author having fun with
the reader. Did you find it
humorous? 3. Did you know Holyoke is a real town in Eastern Colorado? 4.
In Death Foreshadowed Detective Karst is on the case of the
missing child. His sergeant
forces him to work with Jennifer Parker, a psychic, chosen by the little
girl’s parents. How do
you feel about the many psychics who really help the police with their
cases? 5.
The differences between Karst’s partner Bill and Karst begin to
show. Do you feel the
patience Karst has developed while working with Bill helps him to treat
Jennifer Parker with respect? Or
do you think Detective Karst has that same respect for all women? 6.
Do you feel the author adequately portrayed the sense of panic
the residents of Holyoke felt with the death of several friends and
neighbors? 7.
When Detective Karst had his first lesson, so to speak, from
Jennifer Parker about his own psychic abilities that he referred to as
his gut feeling, do you feel it changed him in any way? 8.
Sheriff Dave was torn between his instincts from past experience
working homicide in Denver and the laid back small town lack of crime
when he made his decision to ask Karst for help.
Do you feel he should have called for help sooner?
9.
Trying to keep things quiet to avoid a panic when the Colorado
Bureau of Investigation came in was a choice Dave had to make. Was it the right choice?
Should he have warned the town sooner? 10.
If you’re from a small town do you notice any similarities
between your town and Holyoke? If
you are not from a small town do you think you could live in one? 11.
Do you feel Dr. Foster could have stopped the deaths sooner by
being more open-minded and thorough with his diagnosis of the early
deaths? 12.
Have you ever had an experience similar to the one Karst
experienced when he was visited by Dave at the very end of the book? 13.
At what point, if any, did you suspect the killer? 14. Did you
discover the Elusive Clue word puzzle?
